  Grayslake Cooperative Nursery School
(also known as GCNS and "The Co-op")

The Grayslake Cooperative Nursery School was founded in 1976 by a group of parents who were looking for a quality preschool with a focus on socialization and a positive start to the school experience.

Today, we continue with that same philosophy in mind. The Grayslake Cooperative Nursery School has been educating young children in Grayslake and surrounding areas for almost 40 years. We are friendly, experienced educators and loving, committed parents dedicated to developing children academically, emotionally, socially and physically in a nurturing, family-focused, bright environment. The level of parental involvement in the school's operation and your child's classroom makes our school unique, and helps your child have a positive first school experience. We currently offer classes for children aged 3 through Kindergarten. Please see our About page for more information on classes.

The Cooperative Philosophy

A cooperative preschool operates differently than most other types of preschools. We rely on parent participation to not only make this experience the best for your child, but also for you to be involved in your child's education. Our preschool is designed to have parents and staff working together to provide children with the best preschool experience possible. Our preschool has a lot to offer your child—come see what makes our school so great. Grayslake Cooperative Nursery School is the cooperative preschool in Grayslake and one of the few whose teachers are all certified educators. GCNS has been enriching the lives of the children of our community for over 35 years. We welcome families from Grayslake, Hainesville, Round Lake, Gurnee, Lake Villa, Mundelein, Libertyville, Wildwood, Ingleside, Fox Lake, Wauconda and surrounding areas. We look forward to hearing from you!  Be sure to check out our NEW class offerings for the 2014-2015 school year!! The Cooperative Advantage

The advantages of being a member of the Grayslake Cooperative Nursery School (GCNS) are many for both parents and students.  Our main objective is to provide a positive learning experience for students. We provide equipment, materials, experiences, situations and directions to help attain the following objectives:
  1. Develop self-confidence
  2. Develop security and a feeling of success
  3. Develop the ability to participate in a group setting, follow directions and build self-control
  4. Provide new experiences which broaden the spectrum of the student’s world
  5. Give students the opportunity to appreciate and explore music, literature and art through a variety of media
  6. Academically prepare each student for kindergarten through classroom activities
  7. Provide each student with a positive first-school experience which will be with them the rest of their lives

Benefits of Parents in the Classroom

"Research shows that parent involvement is a major factor in a child's success. The parents who start participating with their children at the preschool or daycare level continue to do so through elementary and high school." — Lynn, Kathy. "Thinking About Preschool", Web Blog post. www.parentingtoday.ca. 6th Jan. 2010.

By observing other children, parents can gain insight into child behavior. "They observe how other parents and the professional teachers handle various situations and gain greater understanding and enjoyment of their own children through active participation in their education." — "Cooperative Preschools - Is this for My Family?", Web page. www.preschools.coop. Retrieved 14th April 2015.

Still on the fence? Here are the top 5 reasons our families said they chose GCNS:

  1. They appreciate the co-op experience
  2. Our teachers are excellent
  3. We follow a play-based philosophy
  4. We provide a bright, friendly, positive environment
  5. Our school received favorable reviews
